I’d have to say you were my primary movement teacher and in some respects the only one I’ve ever had. You taught me (us) how to use movement to express something specific. To remove the cerebral an insert essentially everything else. I’m always fascinated by how you and Justin and Erin move. I’m grateful I got to feel your walk above the ground when we visited your college. You prove that you don’t need to be an “expert in autism” to be essential towards helping those with autism and those without autism grow.
Thank you, Eric. I will always treasure the work you did, on your own, having the TAP/ Breaking Barriers team practice MOVING the key principles in movement sequences. I treasure that video. I know it was challenging for you and others to accept that movement can have a role beyond the obvious, and the seriousness of those young people in presenting principles via movement is striking. I hope you can continue that, and that the Orienting phases in the work skills of Transformational Autism Program can be practiced and deepened.
I agree on so many of your observations. The movement and the love of music somehow makes something work for these young people. Personally, my son,Christopher developed awareness while working with you . Thank you for this article
Such a wonderful article, thank you Valerie! I'm so deeply honoured and grateful to have been part of this invaluable Transformational Movement Education work at Meristem. I loved my time teaching there, the first group of students were an inspiration and joy to me. I am delighted that the work continues so strongly and that dance became an integral part of the TME curriculum, one of my most favourite things to do in life!
Brings back many memories of my first experiences coming aboard the Meristem program.
The music, dance, rhythm, and performance choreography continues to grow each semester now as I carry the torch of movement research and exploration onward!
Much appreciation for bringing this aspect to the program!
Our current core of four areas for movement designed by Erin Schirm at Meristem are:
Rhythm
Self expression
Circus
Gymnastics
All of which have deep roots in the history of dance, music and performing arts

I love how he’s become such a happy dancer. I miss his big smile!
